Volunteering

You cannot convey the necessity to conserve without first passing along the passion and understanding.
That is exactly what the Dallas Safari Club understands and practices as evidenced by the Youth Event they they hold twice year. Middle and High school children in North and Central Texas are offered a special elective class which they can use to fulfill one of the physical education credits they need in order to graduate. This is no ordinary P.E. class. The Outdoor Adventures class teaches fishing, conservation, backpacking, CPR, hunter and boater safety, and much more. During the course, they are offered the chance to attend the S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza sponsored by the Dallas Safari Club (DSC).
This event is an amazing opportunity for the children and one of their parents to put what they have learned in the classroom into action. During the course of the day, the children rotate from station to station learning not only the history but also the implementation of various types of outdoor equipment. For example, at the archery station, the children are taught the differences between the types of bows and how to properly handle them. The attendees, to include the parents, are then given the opportunity to use each type of bow. Parent participation is highly encouraged allowing the children and parents to connect with each other. The staff of the Dallas Safari Club has made this a wonderful opportunity for the children that attend as well as the people who are able to volunteer their time and services.
Please call the Dallas Safari Club offices at 972-980-9800 if you are interested in volunteering. The next event is September 18, 2010 and will be held at Greystone Castle.
We would like to thank the Dallas Safari Club for letting Long Grass be a part of the day and helping us have another way to give back to our future outdoor enthusiasts. We look forward to the spring when we will be able to volunteer again!

We love this book!!
Whether you are planning a safari to Africa or just want to know more about the mammals that live in Africa, this guide is an amazing resource. Written and compiled by Charles and Tilde Stuart, this book has all the information you want.
It is separated into different sections for different types of mammals so you can easily access the information you want. Some of the information that is included for each mammal is: a physical description of the animal, their behavior and their population status. Also included on each mammal is a black and white map of Africa with a color overlay so you can easily reference at a glance where they are commonly found in Africa. The common and correct scientific names are given as well as full color photos so you can be sure that you get photos of the animals you want to know more about.
Happy Safari!!

Something bugging you?

Tilley Hats are the ultimate in sun protection, but what should you do about bug protection?
We have the answer - and these hats are flying off the shelves as more and more people discover these multi-talented hats.
The popular and lightweight LTM6 now has a brother, the LTM6-IS! All the features that you have grown to love (the nylamtium fabric, the crown venting, the 50+ UPF rating) are still a staple of this hat, however the LTM6-IS has a few new added features!
A Tuck-Away Neck Protector
Most tuck-away neck protectors hide within the band of the hat, oftentimes making the hat uncomfortably tight on your head. On the LTM6-IS, the tuck-away neck protector hides inside the BRIM of the hat. This thin pocket runs the entire span of the back half of the hat, a genius design that ensures the hat will sit comfortably on your head all day whether you choose to use the neck protector or not. There are small Velcro patches on the bottom of each side of the neck protector to allow you to wrap the neck protector around and secure it in front of your neck for full coverage protection.
Insect Shield
The LTM6-IS is treated with Buzz Off Insect Shield Permethrin Insect Repellent. This treatment repels mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges (no-see-ums). Permethrin is a man made version of a natural insect repellent found in certain types of chrysanthemum plants. It provides invisible, odorless protection simply by wearing the hat. The innovative process tightly binds the repellent to the fabric fibers so the repellent should last through 70 home launderings.
Sun protection, bug protection, lightweight, vented crown, it floats, it ties on, it repels rain, it won’t shrink….the only thing this hat can’t do, is check your email!

As the summer month temperatures rise, so does your increased risk of getting a sunburn that could potentially derail your vacation. Nothing could be worse than having to sit at camp, with bright red skin that hurts to think about let alone touch.
Here at Long Grass, we like to follow the Tilley “Slip, Slop, Slap” rules.
  - Slip on a long sleeve shirt with a collar. The tighter weave the shirt, the higher UPF rating it gets. However, almost any long sleeve shirt will provide you with some protection.
  - Slop on sunscreen, the higher the rating means you should have more time before your skin begins to burn. Just remember to re- apply the sunscreen at regular intervals.
  - Slap on a wide brimmed hat. With all the options that are available now, staying protected no longer means having to wear unflattering hats with a white streak of zinc running down your nose.
We have many styles available for you to choose from so you can find the perfect hat for all of the exciting adventures that await you this summer. You can view our hat selection at http://www.long-grass.com/products/category/headwear

Looking Good on Safari!

As a female I look to have the same appropriate gear and wardrobe for my trips as men, but I still want to express my femininity in a way that not only looks good but also provides function. Long Grass has provided me with clothing and accessories that allow me to do just that.
One of my favorite pieces of my safari wardrobe is my SHE Empire Shirt. This shirt is elegant yet comfortable with a pleated bodice that allows movement while accenting my figure. I pair this favorite of mine with some PH pants and Elephant Hair jewelry and I am ready for anything!

Amazing new miracle anti-aging face cream!

Nah, not really - such a thing doesn't exist!
But we do have a hat that will protect your delicate face, ears and neck skin from the harsh sunlight. So much better that it is designed in an elegant, head-turning fashion to compliment your style.
Let me tell you the reasons I LOVE the Tilley R4 Raffia hat:
   - it's not heavy on your head and won't scratch your skin (makes us happy) - made of Madagascar Raffia that will soften with age (see our webpage for more information about the raffia used) - I am so impressed with fine gauge of raffia, the meticulous detailing and craftsmanship by a respected 3rd-generation hatter that uses the same equipment and processes as it did 100 years ago - the raffia is crafted as small fine strands that keep the hat soft (not scratchy) yet firm enough to hold its shape - the inner Hydrofil® hatband is buttery soft so it will not scratch your forehead and as a bonus, it includes two spare hatbands so you will always have a fresh one - you never need to worry about getting makeup on it - the matte finish of the raffia will prevent sun glare and with its certified UPF 50+ rating, this hat offers you the excellent protection from the sun's damaging rays (better than a miracle skin cream)
I still wear my LTM6 in the field or fishing, but this R4 is on my head for more gentle activities. I'm sure it would hold up but I just can't bear to get it dirty.
The bad news is: Tilley has quit making them and is out of stock (EGADS!!)
The good news is: Long Grass purchased the remaining inventory and has them in stock for adoption by only the most deserving heads

Treat yourself to this most amazing hat - it will last longer than that miracle cream and does a better job!

Where Valor Lives

We all know that Christmas and Easter have been overly commercialized and if you listen to any radio or TV ads, you will hear them shout to you that Memorial Day is “the beginning of summer”.
No, my friends, it is not. This day has so much deeper significance than a mere changing of the seasons. This is the day to pay our respect, deepest admiration and appreciation to the brave and valiant men and women who gave their lives for our freedoms.
Memorial Day began as many separate services throughout the towns of America honoring and remembering those who died in our nation’s service. As far back as the Civil War ladies of the South were recorded decorating the graves of the Confederate dead. Congress made the day into a three-day weekend in the National Holiday Act of 1971. As time has gone by, the focus has shifted away from the true meaning into another reason to grill and party.
In December 2000, President Clinton passed the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution to help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day. The resolution calls for all Americans “To pause for one minute at 3pm local time on Memorial Day to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.
We encourage you to take the time this Memorial Day to stop and take the time to remember the sacrifices that have been made for you and me. ~Melody Rutkowski
I leave you to your weekend with this poem by Moina Michael. (A poem that inspired the tradition of wearing red poppies on Memorial day.)
We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies.

Words to Taps
Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills, from the lake, From the skies. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Go to sleep, peaceful sleep, May the soldier or sailor, God keep. On the land or the deep, Safe in sleep. Love, good night, Must thou go, When the day, And the night Need thee so? All is well. Speedeth all To their rest. Fades the light; And afar Goeth day, And the stars Shineth bright, Fare thee well; Day has gone, Night is on. Thanks and praise, For our days, 'Neath the sun, Neath the stars, 'Neath the sky, As we go,This we know, God is nigh.

Flying your Flag

Here is a reminder of Flag etiquette for Memorial Day:
    - On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.
    - To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff.
    - The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered.
You can find this information and more about our glorious American Flag at The Flag of the United States of America website. Yes, our Flag has it's own website. I'll bet you find some facts you either forgot or never knew!
Live on Patriots!

Long Grass Binocular Strap

Finally! A binocular strap designed with function and simplicity in mind.
The benefit of the Long Grass Binocular Strap is in the way the strap crosses your body which makes the binoculars easy to maneuver.
Picture yourself crawling through the bush as you try to get to the perfect vantage point. With the Long Grass strap, you can simply slide the binoculars around to the small of your back where they will stay out of the way. This is so much better than the harnesses style that drags your precious optics in the dirt as you crawl! And, if you should have the need to run, our strap will not have the binoculars bouncing on your chest. They will ride snuggly and securely on the small of your back.
When you are walking or riding in a truck, the strap hangs cross body so the binoculars ride on your hip. This keeps them easily within your reach. When you are ready to view from your optics, you simply grab the binoculars and as you pull them up to your eyes, the strap slides around. These straps are lightweight, easily packed and a fantastic addition to your gear - making them one of my favorite Long Grass products.
The Long Grass Binocular strap is priced at $25.00 making it an affordable investment.
Easy to use, easy to care for yet rugged enough to last a lifetime!
