Detail Description
Made from 100% premium Madagascar Raffia that softens with age, the Women's Wide Brim Raffia Hat protects from the sun with a 4" all around brim. Trimmed with a chic black and white grosgrain ribbon with a matching black grosgrain wind cord for an extra touch elegance and a ton of practicality.
The Wide Brim Raffia Hat can be packed relatively flat in a suitcase and popped back into shape upon arrival.
The Hat can be spot-cleaned but not washed. At the front of the Hat there is a removable Hydrofil® forehead sweatband that wicks moisture away from the forehead keeping you cool and your Hat unsoiled. The sweatband can be hand washed in warm water and soap and air-dried.
Please don't pick the "picks" ! "Picks" in the Raffia braid may appear over time as the Hat is worn. These "picks" are natural and should not be trimmed. Trimming the braid or trimming threads too close to the braid can cause the braid or stitching to unravel. Although it is the finest raffia available, and it is a strong, durable material, the Raffia Hat does not carry a lifetime guarantee. Not intended to be worn in heavy or persistent rain, the R4 is treated with a water resistant finish, intended to give enough protection to get you out of the rain.

What is raffia?
The raffia palm plant from Madagascar has the longest leaves in the plant kingdom - up to 20 meters (over 60 feet) in length. The long fibers obtained from the raffia palm are braded by hand. Each braid is then sewn together into a 'form' which is 'blocked' using presses, steam and molds. The result is a beautifully shaped hat with a tight weave that provides excellent sun-blocking protection without losing its breathability. The wonderfully flexible fibers make it crushable and easy to pack.
Background:
Tilley searched far and wide to find an experienced raffia-hat manufacturer to help us produce an exceptional raffia hat, and they found one in Canada. The owner is a most respected 3rd-generation hatter. The facility uses the same equipment and processes that it did 100 years ago, a traditional approach that is still viable today.
Coupling his expertise with Tilley's own hat traditions makes for a well-crafted, beautifully styled hat with these Tilley features:
- crushable and packable
- comes with a secret pocket (large enough to hold a credit card or hotel key and some cash)
- a Hydrofil® sweatband with a removable washable sweatband piece at the forehead. In keeping with the Tilley tradition of delivering a bit more than you expect, three sweatband pieces, just to ensure you always have a fresh one available.
Sun Protection:
Certified UPF 50+ (the maximum rating), the Tilley Raffia Hat, compared to many straw hats, offers you excellent protection from the sun's damaging rays.
Rain, rain go away....
Yes, this Hat has been treated with a water-resistant finish, but is no sou'wester. It'll protect you from a light rain, but not from a downpour. The finish also offers protection from other staining liquids. We recommend re-treating the Hat every two years with a water-repellent spray.
Like your favorite pair of old jeans...
Since raffia is a natural fiber, over time you will notice a softer texture to the Hat; the color of the raffia may vary as well. Its shape will also soften. Again, to re-shape, let steam penetrate the hat, and while still warm, use your hands to reshape it. Your Raffia Hat will become an old favorite for those 'dog days' of summer by the beach, strolling through city streets or lying in a hammock. For breezy days, the Raffia Hat has a wind cord. The cord can be tucked into the crown, or moved to the back of your Raffia Hat when you don't need it.

Cleaning your Raffia Hat:
The Hat cannot be washed, but can be spot cleaned with a soft, dampened cloth. The removable sweatband piece at the front of your Raffia Hat can be hand-washed in warm water and soap and then air dried. Our guarantee: Raffia is a very strong and durable material, but not as durable as the cotton duck, hemp, or nylon. The Raffia Hat does not have a lifetime guarantee.
